OUR PRACTICES

WE BELIEVE IN REGENERATIVE FARMING

  • CROPS

We put our hearts into growing the best food possible, which means we stick to organic practices on our 2.5 acre veggie field. We deeply respect the soil, using natural and sustainable low till methods because we know that's where true nutrient density begins. Every piece of produce gets our full, hands-on attention—it's hand planted, pulled, washed, and prepped to ensure exceptional freshness and flavor for our market and CSA customers.

  • EGGS

Our mixed flock of hens are truly pasture-raised, nesting in a mobile RV that rotates across the fields following the sheep. They produce beautiful shades of white, blue, and brown eggs, and their diet of organic feed, fresh pasture, and leftover farm veggies ensures the yolks are exceptionally bright and flavorful.

  • PIGS

We provide our pigs with large pens, dry bedding, and ample space to run, root, and engage in their natural behaviors like making mud puddles. Their exceptional diet includes a soaked organic mix of grains and legumes, supplemented heavily by fresh farm veggies and local Colorado fruit, ensuring the resulting meat is of the highest quality and flavor.

  • SHEEP

Our sheep are moved across the pasture every 2–3 days using an intensive rotational grazing system that ensures their continuous comfort, exposure to fresh air, and access to the best grazing available. They are grass-fed and grass-finished, relying on fresh pasture and hay grown directly on our farm.

  • COMPOST

On our farm, we believe everything has a purpose; our robust compost system is the cornerstone of our regenerative farming philosophy. We work all winter to build fertility, incorporating a nutrient-rich mix of manure (from our sheep, pigs, and chickens), wood chips, hay, and plant material. By cycling all our organic matter back into the soil, we are continuously enriching the land and giving back the nutrients it provides year after year, ensuring long-term health and vitality for our crops.

  • HAY CUTTING AND BAILING

Hay is an essential resource for our full-circle farm, used extensively to feed our sheep during the colder months and to provide comfortable, dry bedding in our pig pens and nesting material in our chicken coop, ensuring the comfort and well-being of all our animals year-round. Beyond growing hay for our own livestock, Crooked Roots Farm also offers custom cutting and baling services for neighbors in our area; please contact us for more information.
